I’m Nivashini Rajalaxmi, sustainability advisor and a tenacious dreamer !
My connection to silk started with my very first project at NIFT, Bangalore, where I used a old pure silk kancheevaram saree to make a corset dress, which shaped my understanding about luxury and how we perceive it..
That experience, followed by an internship with a silk saree brand in Chennai, showed me just how much silk means to our culture. Growing up on the southern Indian coastline, I have always been surrounded by silk sarees, each woven with stories of tradition and love. Alongside my internship, I grew deeply passionate about mindful and ethical fashion.
As I delved deeper into the fashion and luxury industry, led me to investigate the lifecycle of silk, where I uncovered some surprising truths about silk. I began to notice a disheartening reality: many of these heirloom sarees, cherished for years, end up being burned for their zari, releasing harmful emissions, And let’s not even get started on the silkworms—the little lives sacrificed in the process of making virgin silk. That really hit me hard.
That’s when I knew something had to change, and the idea for CSilk took root. I didn’t want these beautiful sarees to just fade away, so we reimagined their purpose. We’ve turned what would have been discarded into something new, a regenerated silk yarn that carries the legacy of the past into the future. Each thread of CSilk is imbued with the memories and lives of the sarees it comes from, creating a material that holds a unique, storied beauty.
These uncovered truths highlighted the need for formal education in sustainability, leading me to pursue an MA in Sustainable Fashion Business and Practices at Kingston University. There, I gained invaluable insights and skills I needed to turn my vision into reality.
The vibrant silk sarees worn by women as they head to the Koyambedu market, or those fluttering in the Chennai Marina breeze. Some of them adorned at a lively festival, shimmering under the lights of Diwali, or gracefully flowing during the Pongal celebrations. Each saree tells a story of tradition and celebration, weaving through Chennai’s streets and festivals with elegance and pride. —it’s these moments, these histories, that live on in CSilk.
For me, luxury is not just about rarity or price. It’s about the respect and care we give to what came before us. With CSilk, we’re redefining luxury to mean responsibility, craftsmanship, and honoring the lives of both the silk and the silkworms. We’re creating something that values tradition, embraces innovation, and respects the past while looking towards the future.
